ABOUT

Jenna Choi is a Korean–Australian flautist and educator based in Brisbane/Meanjin. Her work is guided by an enduring curiosity about what it means to be human — how we move, feel, listen, and tell stories. Through performance and collaboration, she seeks to shape musical spaces that are intimate, reflective, and socially conscious, with particular attention to voices that are often underrepresented. At the heart of her practice is a desire to foster connection: between performer and audience, tradition and new perspectives, sound and lived experience.

Immigrating to Australia with her family at a young age, Jenna found in music — and in the flute — a profound sense of identity and belonging. What began as a childhood refuge evolved into a lifelong vocation. She studied at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS) before completing a Bachelor of Music, Degree with Honours at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, The University of Melbourne, and a Master of Music Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, under the guidance of Mardi McSullea and Alison Mitchell.

During her studies, Jenna was the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, including the John Hopkins Music Award, the Premier’s VCE Award, AG McMillen Arts Trust, Ellinor Gertrude Harris Bequest, and the Bebbington Prize.

Jenna performs as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. In 2024, she made her concerto debut with the Queensland Conservatorium String Orchestra, performing André Jolivet’s Flute Concerto. She has appeared in masterclasses with distinguished international artists across Europe and Australia, including Leone Buyse, Trevor Wye, Adam Walker, Paul Edmund-Davies, Sally Walker, and Michel Bellavance. A committed collaborator, Jenna has been a founding member of several chamber ensembles and has served as section principal and committee member of the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Jenna also finds great joy in teaching and has established a vibrant and sought-after teaching practice alongside her performing career. She currently teaches at leading schools in Brisbane, including St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School, Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie), and Padua College. Her studio is known for its thoughtful, holistic approach — balancing technical discipline with creativity, independence, and musical story-telling. Jenna values the responsibility of guiding young musicians through formative years of growth, offering the same generosity, rigour, and encouragement she received from her own mentors.
